MY LATEST FEAR
Now that we’re getting good news from Iraq, I find myself fearing victory more than defeat. There are few things worse than seeing a bully benefit from his agression and hubris. I love our country very much but I don’t think this war is worthy of us and I believe that success might have some very bad effects upon how we think and the way we live. When I read The Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich not long ago it was remarkable to realize the narcotic effect of the early victories [Czechoslovakia, Austria and Poland] upon the German populace. When I say narcotic I don’t mean euphoric but drowsy. The Germans were much more excited at the outset of WW1. Here we are going to hear about how rendition and tough interrogation [torture] were intregral aspects of our accomplishment. Most of us will accept it. Under the worst case scenario things will be harsh for those who don’t. It could be the last gasp for the Anti-War Movement, which has been very important in American thinking and culture. I hope that I am wrong, but there I said it.
